Michelle Markesteyn, an award-winning food and nutrition scholar, set out to create a lifestyle brand to make it easy to raise happy, healthy kids and help our farmers prosper. Through television, print and online media, Rootopia provides audiences across television, print and online media the knowledge, motivation and skills they need to find, grow, prepare and eat healthy local foods.

In close collaboration with a local artist and illustrator, a series of characters were created to make the foods we eat and grow more accessible and engaging for kids. These characters are used across the state of Oregon through Oregon State University’s farm-to-school extension activities.
